Pocahontas County High School Celebrates Ribbon Cutting for New Gymnasium Floor

Pocahontas County, WV — December 16

— Pocahontas County High School marked a major facilities improvement with a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 16 to celebrate the completion of its newly renovated gymnasium floor. The event took place prior to the evening’s basketball game and brought together Pocahontas County Schools (PCS) Board of Education members, Superintendent Dr. Leatha Williams, PCHS staff, coaches, student-athletes, families, and community members.

The gymnasium project represents months of careful planning, renovation, and investment in school facilities. Funding for the new gym floor was made possible through a Major Improvement Project (MIP) grant awarded by the West Virginia School Building Authority (SBA). In addition to the floor replacement, the entire gymnasium was repainted using local funds, creating a bright, refreshed environment for students and spectators.

Community partnerships also played an important role in enhancing the space. Pendleton Community Bank contributed funding for a new scorer’s table and player seating, improving both the functionality and appearance of the gym during athletic events and school activities.

Superintendent Dr. Leatha Williams emphasized the importance of creating safe, welcoming environments for students, staff, and the community.

“Our mantra for Pocahontas County Schools this year is ‘Stronger Together,’” said Williams. “Part of being stronger together is creating environments where staff, students, and our community want to gather, learn, and celebrate.”

Director of Maintenance Duane Gibson highlighted the gymnasium’s vital role beyond athletics.

“High school gymnasiums aren’t just the focal point of the school—they’re the focal point of the community,” Gibson said. “We want this to be a place people are proud to call their own.”

The newly updated gymnasium will continue to serve as a central hub for athletics, school activities, and community events for years to come, supporting student engagement and community pride across Pocahontas County.
